Badri calf birth marks a milestone for an indigenous-breed research programme

The reported OPU-IVF birth may support conservation work, but evidence is limited to a single successful outcome.

ICAR-NDRI and G. B. Pant University report the birth of a healthy female Badri calf on 11 September following an OPU-IVF embryo transfer.

The embryo came from selected Badri parents and was transferred to a Sahiwal recipient cow. The collaborative programme began in 2023 with support from the Uttarakhand Biotechnology Council, and another recipient was expected to calve within days.

Why it matters

Advanced reproductive methods may help conserve and multiply scarce indigenous livestock genetics faster than conventional breeding alone.

A successful birth is a research milestone. Conservation value depends on repeatable live-birth rates, genetic diversity, animal welfare, cost and integration with field breeding programmes.

Limitations

This is one reported birth. The release provides no embryo count, pregnancy rate, health follow-up, genetic-diversity analysis, cost comparison or independent peer-reviewed validation.
