BHASHINI and Kathmandu University explore local-language technology
Discussions covered language data, scripts, voice systems and stronger models for Nepali, Newari, Tamang and Gurung.
Digital India BHASHINI has met Kathmandu University's digital public infrastructure and artificial-intelligence team to explore stronger language models and voice-based solutions.
The discussion included Nepali, Newari, Tamang and Gurung, with attention to language data, scripts and practical services for languages that are less well represented in current digital systems.
Why it matters
Language coverage influences whether people can use public services, education and digital tools in the language and mode most familiar to them. Underrepresented languages also present difficult data and evaluation problems.
SCULTRA point of view
The collaboration could become a useful regional test bed if it produces governed datasets, representative evaluation, safe deployment practices and services that are tested with the communities they are intended to support.
Limitations
The release describes exploratory discussions. It does not announce a new signed implementation plan, data-sharing arrangement, performance benchmark or deployed public service.
