A Ministry of Ayush backgrounder estimates that the sector's market value increased from US$2.85 billion in 2014 to US$43.4 billion in 2023. It reports that exports rose from US$1.09 billion to US$2.16 billion over the same period.

The release also cites a 2022-23 national survey in which 46.3% of rural residents and 52.9% of urban residents reported Ayush use for treatment or prevention. It identifies the Ayush Visa and international traditional-medicine frameworks as potential growth enablers.

Why it matters

The sector combines domestic healthcare use, small-business activity, exports and medical-value travel. Commercial growth depends on safety, evidence and credible regulation.

SCULTRA point of view

Market size should not be treated as a proxy for clinical effectiveness. Sustainable expansion requires transparent product standards, adverse-event monitoring, reproducible research and clear separation between wellness and medical claims.

Limitations

The backgrounder combines datasets and projections from different years and definitions. It does not provide a reconciled market-sizing method, product-level safety evidence or proof that projected medical travel will accrue to Ayurveda.
