Government urges healthcare industry to diversify supply chains and move beyond generics
A ministerial address called for stronger domestic capacity in pharmaceutical inputs and more investment in new molecules, biotechnology and medical devices.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has called on India's healthcare industry to diversify pharmaceutical supply chains, strengthen domestic capacity in active pharmaceutical ingredients and key starting materials, and increase investment beyond generic medicines.
Speaking at Bharat Health Global Expo 2026, he highlighted new molecules, biosimilars, biotechnology and medical devices. The address also cited bulk-drug parks in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh and said 100 new industrial parks were being developed.
Why it matters
Dependence on concentrated suppliers can expose pharmaceutical production to disruption. Research spending, device localisation and access to export markets also influence investment, skilled jobs and India's position in global healthcare value chains.

The operating scorecard should track API import concentration, commercial research spending, patents, clinical-development milestones, domestic component value-add, export mix and actual park occupancy. Policy intent becomes valuable when supply-chain risk and innovation output measurably improve.
Limitations
Most figures and ambitions come from a ministerial speech. The release gives no project-level budget, completion timetable, import-dependency baseline or audited estimate for the jobs and investment it says could result.
