August labour survey shows higher participation while unemployment holds at 5%
Labour-force participation rose to 55.6% and the worker-population ratio reached 52.8%, according to the monthly PLFS bulletin.
The August 2026 Periodic Labour Force Survey monthly bulletin reports an all-India labour-force participation rate of 55.6% for people aged 15 and above, up from 55.4% in July. The worker-population ratio rose to 52.8%, while unemployment remained at 5% under the Current Weekly Status measure.
Rural labour-force participation was 58.2%, the rural worker-population ratio was 55.8% and rural unemployment was 4.1%. Overall female labour-force participation reached 34.8%.
Why it matters
Participation, employment and unemployment together provide a fuller view of labour-market conditions than any single rate and influence household income, consumption and workforce planning.

Stable unemployment should be read with participation, gender, rural-urban composition and job quality. More people working or seeking work does not by itself establish wage growth, hours, productivity or employment security.
Limitations
The monthly methodology changed from January 2025 and uses survey estimates under Current Weekly Status, so it is not equivalent to payroll or administrative employment data. Monthly movements may include sampling and seasonal effects, and the release does not establish causality.
