India opens a 25-block commercial coal auction round
The government also signed production agreements for six earlier awards with combined peak-rated capacity of 11.62 million tonnes a year.
The Ministry of Coal launched the 16th commercial coal-mine auction round with 25 blocks across nine states, comprising 21 fully explored and four partially explored blocks.
It also executed development and production agreements for six mines awarded in earlier rounds. The ministry reports about 1,504 million tonnes of geological reserves and combined peak-rated capacity of 11.62 million tonnes a year across those six mines.
Why it matters
The round bears on domestic fuel supply, regional investment, industrial emissions, land use and India's longer-term energy transition.

Auction and agreement counts should be followed by mine-opening timelines, approval status, rehabilitation, production delivery, methane and pollution controls, and compatibility with power-sector transition plans.
Limitations
The ministry's revenue, investment and employment figures are projections. Peak-rated capacity is not current production, and the release provides no project-level commencement date or environmental-performance measure.
