CAZRI moth-bean varieties withstand a 35-day dry spell in research fields

Four recently released varieties maintained growth and pod development, but the evidence comes from current-season institute fields rather than completed multi-location trials.

ICAR's Central Arid Zone Research Institute reported that four moth-bean varieties released in the last three years maintained growth and pod development during a roughly 35-day dry spell in the 2026 kharif season.

The release provides rainfall, evaporation, soil-moisture and crop-management details from institute fields. It says seed production covers seven hectares against a 23.32-quintal indent for 2026.

Why it matters

Moth bean supports dryland farming in western Rajasthan, where the release puts cultivation near 10 lakh hectares and average productivity around 350 kilograms per hectare. Stress-tolerant varieties could reduce climate risk if results hold across locations and seasons.

SCULTRA point of view

The field observation is a promising signal, not proof of broad resilience. Independent multi-location yield trials and farmer-field performance should guide claims about climate adaptation and adoption potential.

Limitations

The release describes current-season research-farm observations and does not present control varieties, replicated yield statistics, confidence intervals or completed harvest results. Its adoption potential also depends on seed multiplication and market uptake.
