Raigarh steel-slag road moves industrial-waste technology toward wider use

A technology-transfer agreement and a planned 40-kilometre application in Odisha move the approach beyond a single demonstration.

A 1.85-kilometre steel-slag road in Raigarh, built using CSIR-Central Road Research Institute technology with Jindal Steel, has received a Guinness World Records recognition.

The official release reports a technology-transfer agreement and describes a planned 40-kilometre application in Odisha. It says the method can reduce construction cost by about 40%, provide four times the strength of conventional methods and lower maintenance needs for roughly 15 years.

Why it matters

Using steel slag in roads could reduce industrial waste and demand for mined aggregates while creating a commercial route for circular-economy infrastructure.

The technology-transfer step matters more than the record. Repeatable specifications, procurement acceptance and monitored field performance will determine whether the demonstration can scale.

Limitations

The cost, strength and maintenance figures are government claims linked to a specific implementation. Wider use still requires site-specific engineering, environmental safeguards, standards compliance and lifecycle evidence across traffic and climate conditions.
