Controlled-environment facility aims to shorten climate-resilient crop research cycles
The SPROUT facility combines high-throughput plant phenotyping and stress screening with a protocol that can reduce a chickpea generation to about 40 days.
BRIC-NIPGR has opened the SPROUT facility for season-independent, high-throughput plant phenotyping, precision stress screening and evaluation of germplasm, breeding populations, mutants, transgenic plants and genome-edited lines.
The facility initially focuses on chickpea and can be paired with NIPGR's SpeedSeed protocol, which the official release says can reduce one generation cycle to about 40 days.
Why it matters
Faster, controlled trait evaluation could help researchers test drought, heat, salinity and other resilience characteristics more quickly before field validation.

Controlled environments are valuable research infrastructure, but public impact depends on rigorous field trials, transparent biosafety and performance evidence, breeder access and the time required to deliver affordable varieties to farmers.
Limitations
The release describes facility capability, not a newly released crop variety or proven yield gain. It provides no construction or operating cost, throughput benchmark, external-access rules, field-validation result or adoption timetable.
