DRI reports seizure of 86 live Tokay geckos in Assam
The protected animals were transferred with two apprehended people to the Mariani Range Forest office after an interception on 22 September.
DRI officers say they intercepted two people at Bandar Chalia Gaon Ground in Mariani, Assam, and recovered 86 live Tokay geckos on 22 September.
The agency seized the animals under the Wildlife Protection Act and transferred them, together with the two apprehended people, to the Mariani Range Forest office. Tokay geckos are listed in Schedule I of the Act and Appendix II of CITES.
Why it matters
The recovery points to continuing illicit demand for protected species and the need for coordination between customs intelligence, forest authorities and wildlife enforcement teams.
