Varanasi plans a ₹10,998 crore elevated corridor from NH-31 to the ring road
The 43.218-kilometre corridor is intended to connect highways, railway stations, the airport, Ramnagar Port and city commercial areas.
Following Union Cabinet approval in July, NHAI is to develop the 43.218-kilometre Varuna Elevated Corridor as a predominantly elevated six-lane or four-lane link between NH-31 and the Varanasi Ring Road.
The project includes flyovers, ramps, service roads and major bridge structures. The official release projects that travel from NH-31 to Kashi Railway Station could fall from about 40 minutes to nearly 20 minutes, while airport access from Varanasi Junction could fall from almost an hour to about 20 minutes.
Why it matters
The corridor could reshape passenger and freight movement among highways, rail stations, the airport, Ramnagar Port and commercial areas in a congested and historically sensitive city.

The project should be evaluated through actual journey-time reliability, public-transport integration, induced traffic, river and neighbourhood impacts, pedestrian access and transparent construction milestones.
Limitations
The stated time savings and economic benefits are forecasts. The release provides no traffic-model assumptions, construction timetable, procurement status, independent heritage review, environmental-assessment detail or displacement analysis.
